Emulating a biological synapse
In this work we developed a new technology to integrate silicon photonics/ plasmonics with a nanoscale optical synapse.
In our paper that appeared in ACS Nano, we demonstrate for the first time that an integrated optical signal can be leveraged to make the switching behaviour of conventional, two-terminal, electrical memristors better compatible with deep learning applications. Hence, through light irradiation, the recognition accuracy of a deep neural network (DNN) consisting of crossbar arrays of memristors significantly improves. See more details here:
